we’ve got you covered with our list of the best things to do in Lisbon for Easter. This year, Easter will happen on the 17th of April. Easter is a very important celebration in Portugal and you’ll find diverse traditions around this holiday. We choose some suggestions for you to enjoy ou capital in the best possible way!
Try codfish for Good Friday its a tradition...
The first thing you must do for Easter is to have codfish on Good Friday. Good Friday is the end of Lent and a very important and traditional day in our country, this is a great opportunity to try one of the countless traditional codfish dishes.
My favourite one is “bacalhau com Natas, which is codfish with cream. It is baked in the oven and super yummy. But you can also stay on track with the tradition and try any of the other codfish delicacies such as “bacalhau à brás“, or “bacalhau com todos“.
There are countless codfish recipes, you just have to pick the one that best suits your tastes and preferences. If you want to learn more about Portuguese traditional food and the many codfish recipes, try to enter a typical Portuguese restaurant in Lisbon and discover everything about Portuguese gastronomy!
Visit the National Museum of Ancient Art
You are in Lisbon for Easter, one of the best things to do is to visit the National Museum of Ancient Art. The great works you’ll find there will give you a deeper insight into Portuguese culture and history. Plus, it has a great coffee shop with a balcony overlooking the river Tagus where you can relax afterwards!
Bike Trip along the Cycling Lanes
This is a more adventurous suggestion. Around this time of the year, the weather is opening up and you’ll find the sun shining through, which means the weather will be great to go on a bike ride along the cycling lanes that have been built in the city in the past few years. You can rent a bike in many areas of our capital, just download the app and chose a bike, go for a ride and return your bike when you’re done!
Attend the Easter Mass
Another traditional thing to do for Easter is to join the Easter celebratory mass on Sunday Morning. You’ll find the Catholic community and the Orthodox community celebrating the rebirth of Jesus Chris. On Easter Sunday, you’ll find celebrations all throughout Lisbon. In the city centre, you’ll find many churches hosting their celebrations and you are certain to expect Easter celebrations at the Sé de Lisboa, which is close to Alfama. A great plan for your Easter Sunday is to attend the morning celebrations at Sé, have lunch at one of the great restaurants nearby and walk up to Castle of St. George and then stop in one of the viewpoints and have. a drink with a side of a breathtaking sunset.
Have a walk at Tapada das Necessidades
Another great plan is to have a walk at Tapada das Necessidades. After your lunch, it is a great idea to aid digestion while walking the park. Tapada das Necessidades is well-preserved, which makes it a romantic and quiet place to have a walk. Many tourists ignore the existence of the park. The few who actually visited it came across it by mistake. The locals usually go there with their children and have picnics.
